Ford Return to Form with the New Mustang
Added: 06 July 2018
The 2018 Ford Mustang is a welcomed return to form for Ford with their new flagship sports car showing off a subtle combination of retro and modern elements.
Out on the road it’s immediately recognisable as a Mustang which will bring joy to a lot of the old school petrol heads. Ford haven’t forgotten about their more modern day fans either as they have engineered a new chassis for it which provides a comfortable ride and impressive handling.
With prices starting from £33,645 there aren’t many other cars available right now that will give you this much of a thrill along with turning so many heads on the high street. The outright performance of the new Mustang makes it the ultimate bargain fast car.
Over the years we’ve been lead to believe (and rightly so) that big American V8-powered cars can’t do both straight line speed and cornering. However, with the new 2018 Mustang Ford have abolished this idea by replacing the prehistoric rear hamstrung suspension with a new independent suspension on all four individual axis; resulting in a Mustang that is just as rewarding to drive round bends as it is in a straight line.
Talking of straight line speed, the new Ford Mustang come equipped with a 5.0-litre V8 engine that doesn’t let the side down when it comes to performance. It has a power output of 444bhp at 7,000rpm red line with third or fourth gear being your best bet for optimum responsiveness. Ford claim that this engine will get from 0-62mph in just 4.8 seconds, which for a car in this price bracket is frankly astounding. If you just want to cruise then you can slip it in to fifth or sixth gear as this will drop the revs to around 1,800rpm at 70mph, toning the engine sound down along with it.
If you’re slightly concerned about the running costs of a big 5.0-litre V8 in the UK then you might want to consider the 2.3-litre four-cylinder turbo EcoBoost engine option. It’s not as quick as the V8 but it is certainly still punchy and once the turbo kicks in you’ll notice that it’s nearly as quick as the V8 – but obviously nowhere near as satisfying in terms of the noise it makes.
Rather unlike the Ford Mustangs of the past, the new version comes with an array of equipment which meets your expectations of a European car.
Features you’ll find that come as standard include; a Ford SYNC 3.8-inch touchscreen infotainment system with a nine-speaker stereo and DAB to go with it, 19-inch black alloy wheels, a rear view camera, climate control, and Xenon headlights.
Go for the V8 version and you get an additional bespoke sports grille with GT badging, launch control, and also six-pot brakes.
